Camper felt lining: Carpet felt or self-adhesive felt – which is right for you?
You are planning to convert your VW T5, T6, Mercedes Sprinter or Fiat Ducato and are faced with the question: Should you choose carpet felt with spray adhesive or self-adhesive felt ? Don't worry, you're not alone—we get asked this question almost every day. In this article, we'll show you the differences, advantages, and applications of both types of camper felt coverings so you can make the best decision for your project.
The agony of choice: Which felt covering suits you?
Both variants—carpet felt and self-adhesive camper felt—were specially developed for use in campers. They are robust, flexible, and adapt perfectly to uneven surfaces such as side rails, wheel arches, or ribs.
Before you decide, you should clarify the following questions for yourself:
-
How experienced are you in manual work?
-
Do you need room for corrections?
-
Do you want to work particularly quickly and cleanly?
-
What exactly in the camper do you want to cover – rear doors, garage or your camper wall paneling?
-
How professional should the result be?
Carpet Felt – The flexible camper felt covering with spray adhesive
Our Carpet Felt (also known as 4-way stretch felt) is approximately 3 mm thick and is applied with heat-resistant spray adhesive. Both the stretch felt and the surface to be bonded are sprayed (two-sided bonding process). This creates an extremely strong and permanent bond.
Advantages of camper felt for DIY construction with spray adhesive
✅ Very strong adhesion, even on difficult surfaces
✅ Ideal for curves, corners and complex shapes
✅ Corrections possible: simply peel off, respray & stick again
✅ High-quality, professional finish
✅ Heat-resistant up to 110 °C (with suitable adhesive)
Tip: Make sure the surfaces are thoroughly cleaned before applying the spray adhesive. For optimal results when bonding camper felt, we recommend our heat-resistant spray adhesive TEMP 110. You can find detailed application instructions here.
Self-adhesive felt – The quick alternative for DIY fans
The self-adhesive camper felt is approximately 2 mm thick and ideal for those who want to work easily and without much preparation. Simply cut to size, peel off the film, and stick it on directly.
Advantages of stretchable adhesive felt
✅ No glue, no protective clothing required
✅ Very fast, clean processing – perfect for making your own camper cladding
✅ Ideal for small areas and quick projects
✅ Ideal for doors, small parts or furniture panels
Important: Corrections are almost impossible, as the adhesive strength is lost upon removal. However, minor errors can easily be corrected with a little spray adhesive. Here, too, the surfaces must be clean, free of dust, and grease before gluing.
Colors & combinations – the best of both worlds
The good news: Both felt variants are available from us in similar colors. So you can combine carpet felt and self-adhesive felt. For example, carpet felt for the wheel arches and interior trim of your camper, and self-adhesive felt for simple surfaces, door panels, or your headliner. Please be careful not to apply the variants directly next to each other—differences in thickness and color may be visible. For combinations, we recommend using them in separate areas.
-
Self-adhesive felt is thinner and less bulky
-
Carpet felt is more robust and abrasion-resistant, ideal for areas with high mechanical stress (e.g. rear garage)
Our practical recommendation
In our professional camper conversions, we rely almost exclusively on camper felt with spray adhesive. Why? Because this type of camper felt lining offers the highest quality and durability. This option is unbeatable, especially in high temperatures and under heavy use.
Conclusion: Which felt is suitable for your camper project?
